Council seeks to make election voting easier

November 01 2016

College Council wants a number of changes to the election process. Among other benefits, the changes would make it easier for members to vote in Council elections.

At its September 29-30 meeting, Council voted to ask the Minister of Education for several amendments to the election regulation. The changes would:

  •  permit eligible College members to vote only for the system position(s) in which they work
  •  recognize all provincial school authorities as eligible employers
  •  fill positions that were vacant during an election at Council’s first business meeting following the inaugural meeting
  •  let elected and appointed Council members approve an appointment to fill a vacant Council position caused by the election
  •  limit a Council member’s term to six consecutive years, except for exceptional circumstances
  •  prohibit individuals who have reached their six-year term limit from running until at least one three-year term of Council has elapsed

In a related motion, Council amended College bylaws to enable a committee chair to be appointed from remaining committee members if the position becomes vacant.
