Math Proficiency Test

Certification Requirement: Mathematics Proficiency Test

As of February 1, 2025, successfully completing the Mathematics Proficiency Test (MPT) is a certification requirement for most applicants.

Below you will find detailed information about the MPT requirement and how it applies to various groups as of February 1, 2025.

About The MPT

There is no cost to take the MPT, and all individuals can take the test as many times as needed to pass.

The MPT is developed, facilitated, and evaluated by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO).

Please visit www.mathproficiencytest.ca for the latest information on test registration and sittings.

Ontario Applicants

All Ontario applicants for a general Certificate of Qualification and Registration (CQR) must successfully complete the MPT, with one exception.

Applicants who completed an initial teacher education program designed specifically to prepare teachers to teach an Indigenous language (Anishinaabek, Mushkegowuk, Onkwehonwe, Lenape) are exempt from the MPT requirement.

This exemption applies only to applicants who have completed one of these programs:

  1. Lakehead University: Indigenous Teacher Language Diploma (ILTD)
  2. Nipissing University: Teacher of Indigenous Language as a Second Language Program (TILSL)

In limited circumstances, the College may also consider exempting an applicant or member from the MPT requirement if acceptable documentation of their employment as an Indigenous languages teacher is provided to the College.

Applicants for a Transitional Certificate or a Multi-Session Transitional Certificate

Applicants are not required to successfully complete the MPT to be eligible for a Transitional Certificate (TCQR) or a Multi-Session Transitional Certificate (MTCQR). However, they will be required to successfully complete the MPT in order to convert their certificate to a general CQR.

Ontario Certified Teachers who hold a Transitional Certificate or Multi-Session Transitional Certificate

Ontario Certified Teachers (OCTs) who currently hold a TCQR or MTCQR are required to successfully complete the MPT and their initial teacher education program before they can convert their certificate to a general CQR.

Internationally Educated Teacher (IET) Applicants

Internationally Educated Teachers (IETs) are individuals who are certified by a teacher regulatory authority outside of Canada.

IET applicants must successfully complete the MPT within two years of being granted their initial certification by the College or their certificate will expire.

Ontario Labour Mobility Applicants

Teachers who are certified in another Canadian province or territory and are applying under the Ontario Labour Mobility Act (OLMA) are not required to complete the MPT.

Quick Facts

Do OCTs have to complete the MPT?

Any Ontario Certified Teacher who holds a general Certificate of Qualification and Registration on February 1, 2025, is not required to complete the MPT.

Internationally Educated Teacher (IET) applicants, however, must successfully complete the MPT within two years of receiving their initial certification from the College, or their certificate will expire.

Why is the MPT a certification requirement?

The MPT certification requirement was legislated by the Government of Ontario. Any questions about this requirement should be directed to the Ministry of Education.

What is on the MPT and how do I complete it?

The MPT has two sections:

  1. The mathematics curriculum section, relating to the Ontario mathematics curriculum for Grades 3 to 9, comprises at least 70 per cent of the MPT.
  2. The pedagogy section comprises the remainder of the MPT.

All applicants must achieve a mark of 70 per cent or higher in each of the MPT’s two sections to successfully complete it.

In addition to the two components of the MPT, applicants can complete an optional questionnaire consisting of identity-based questions, and a Mathematics Attitude and Perceptions Survey composed of questions designed to assess overall attitudes and dispositions toward mathematics at the undergraduate level.

Is there a cost to take the MPT?

There is no cost for writing the test, including for repeated attempts. You can attempt the test as many times as required.

How do I register to take the MPT?

Please visit www.mathproficiencytest.ca for the latest information on test registration and sittings.

The College does not have a role in MPT registration or scheduling. For more information, please contact EQAO.

Who evaluates the MPT?

EQAO is responsible for evaluating the MPT and reporting results to the College when an individual has successfully completed the MPT. That report does not include information related to the number of attempts the individual required nor the scores they achieved.

Additional Information

Please refer to the College’s FAQs for further information about the MPT requirement and College certification.
