Council Meeting Summary

During the October 1 meeting, College Council:

  • received a quarterly report from the Registrar & CEO.
  • approved a request to the Minister of Education that regulations be amended to permit the College to establish a process to administratively suspend members who fail to complete the Sexual Abuse Prevention Program before July 2, 2025. If a member’s license is suspended, they can no longer teach in the publicly funded school system. The specified parameters of these regulations will include:
  1. Intent to Suspend Notice

    The Registrar shall not suspend a member’s certificate of qualification and registration without first giving the member two months’ notice of intention to suspend.

  2. Reinstatement

    Members whose certificate of qualification and registration was suspended as a result of their failure to complete the SAPP before July 2, 2025, are eligible to have the suspension lifted upon successful completion of the SAPP and payment of a reinstatement fee of $130 (as required by section 18.03 of the College bylaws for removal of a license suspension).

  3. Public Register Notation

    OCTs whose membership has been administratively suspended for failing to complete the SAPP before July 2, 2025, will have a status indicating the administrative suspension on the Public Register until they have completed the SAPP.

  • approved an amendment to the College bylaws to remove a requirement that completion of the Mathematics Proficiency Test be noted on a member’s public register page.
  • received various correspondence.
  • received a report from the Audit and Finance Subcommittee and passed motions approving:
    • the Investigations and Professional Conduct department’s request for immediate approval to hire six full-time equivalents to be funded from the current 2024 budget with a funding impact in the 2025 budget of $832,067.
  • received a quarterly financial report for the period ending June 30, 2024.
  • received a report of the Selection and Nominating Subcommittee and approved the subcommittee’s recommendations for Council, committee and roster member appointments and reappointments.
  • received a report from the Registration Appeals Committee.
  • received a report from the Accreditation Committee.
  • received a report from the Standards of Practice and Education Committee.
  • received reflections on a College presentation to a First Nations community.
