Supporting Teaching Excellence
Every year, the Ontario College of Teachers Scholarship Program awards four scholarships to exemplary teacher candidates.
The program identifies those with a passion for and dedication to the highest ideals of teaching and provides them with direct financial assistance to support their education.
If you are a teacher candidate in an Ontario consecutive or concurrent teacher education program who will graduate in 2026 or beyond, you are eligible to apply.
Financial awards are made possible through donations. Awards are paid directly to individuals according to the College’s criteria.

College Scholarships
The Ontario College of Teachers Scholarship Program offers four awards annually:
- Joseph W. Atkinson Scholarship for Excellence in Teacher Education
- Ontario College of Teachers Primary/Junior or Junior/Intermediate Scholarship
- Ontario College of Teachers Intermediate/Senior Scholarship
- Brian P. McGowan Scholarship for Resilience
Candidates can apply for up to two scholarships at the same time, however the selection committee can only award one scholarship per candidate.

If you’re a teacher candidate in an Ontario consecutive or concurrent teacher education program who will graduate in 2026, you are eligible to apply for the following:
Joseph W. Atkinson Scholarship for Excellence in Teacher Education
The Joseph W. Atkinson Scholarship is named in honour of the College’s second Registrar. A $1,500 award is made annually to one student.
The selection committee will consider the following:
- outstanding academic achievement (A-, A or A+ GPA in undergraduate studies)
- high level of preparedness for teacher education through leadership, community participation and/or extracurricular activities
- relevant work experience
- academic, professional and personal references
Ontario College of Teachers Primary/Junior or Junior/Intermediate Scholarship
The Ontario College of Teachers’ Primary/Junior or Junior/Intermediate Scholarship is awarded to an Ontario teacher candidate in the Primary/Junior or Junior/Intermediate division. A $1,500 award is made annually to one student.
The selection committee will consider the following:
- a high level of preparedness for teacher education through leadership, community participation and/or extracurricular activities
- relevant work experience
- a strong GPA in undergraduate studies
- academic, professional and personal references
Ontario College of Teachers Intermediate/Senior Scholarship
The Ontario College of Teachers’ Intermediate/Senior Scholarship is awarded to an Ontario teacher candidate in the Intermediate/Senior division. A $1,500 award is made annually to one student.
The selection committee will consider the following:
- a high level of preparedness for teacher education through leadership, community participation and/or extracurricular activities
- relevant work experience
- a strong GPA in undergraduate studies
- academic, professional and personal references
Brian P. McGowan Scholarship for Resilience
The Brian P. McGowan Scholarship is named in honour of the College’s fourth Registrar. A $1,500 award is made annually to one student.
Applications are assessed on references and a candidate’s demonstrated resilience in the face of adversity, their tenacity and ability to overcome significant barriers to achieve their academic and social goals to pursue a teaching career.
