Acceptable Teaching Experience for Additional Qualifications

This information will help you determine if your teaching experience is acceptable for entry into an Additional Qualification (AQ) course or to fulfill a practicum condition on your certificate. Please review the chart carefully and make note of the section that applies to your experience.

Ontario's publicly funded schools

Acceptable teaching experience

  • certified to teach in Ontario
  • the experience occurred in an elementary or secondary school, and
  • teaching experience must be paid

Verified teaching experience in writing

For entry into AQ courses:

To fulfil a practicum condition, experience must be verified by a principal or a supervisory officer.

Teaching experience from a school that is authorized to operate in the jurisdiction

Search for publicly funded schools in Ontario.

Other schools in Ontario
(private schools, First Nations education authorities and international schools authorized by the Ontario Ministry of Education)

Acceptable teaching experience

  • certified to teach in Ontario
  • the experience occurred in an elementary or secondary school, and
  • teaching experience must be paid

Verified teaching experience in writing

For entry into AQ courses:

To fulfil a practicum condition, experience must be verified by a principal or a Supervisory Officer from Ontario’s Ministry of Education

Teaching experience must be from a school authorized to operate in the jurisdiction

Private / International schools must be authorized by Ontario’s Ministry of Education and appear on this list.

Schools outside of Ontario

Acceptable teaching experience

  • teaching experience was obtained after you were certified to teach in the jurisdiction where the experience was acquired or
    • after the completion of your teacher education program if the jurisdiction does not have a licensing body
  • the experience occurred in an elementary or secondary school, and
  • teaching experience must be paid

Verified teaching experience in writing

For entry into AQ courses, experience must be verified by the appropriate supervisory official in the jurisdiction. If the jurisdiction does not have a supervisory official role the experience should be verified by a principal.

Authorized to operate by the Ministry of Education or an equivalent authority in the jurisdiction.
