The Ontario College of Teachers licenses, governs and regulates the province’s teaching profession in the public interest and to protect students. All publicly funded school teachers and administrators in Ontario must be licensed by us and be Ontario Certified Teachers (OCT).
The College regulates the teaching profession to protect students. Teachers in Ontario’s publicly funded elementary and secondary schools must be certified by the College, keep their membership in good standing, and follow the profession’s ethical and practice standards.

Members may be required to complete Prescribed Professional Learning courses, also called remedial courses, in the following scenarios:
Members may also be required to complete other types of courses, such as Additional Basic Qualifications or Additional Qualifications.
Courses are tailored to members’ specific needs and focus on the areas of practice requiring remediation. Course outlines have been developed to address the four most common types of Prescribed Professional Learning courses:
The Registrar must pre-approve courses, which are taught by practitioners with demonstrated educational leadership, and/or expertise in a particular subject.
The decision of the panel of the Investigation Committee, Discipline Committee or Fitness to Practise Committee will outline the type of course(s) that you are required to take and specified area(s) of focus. Course outlines can be found in the links above.
